Scout's Eagle projects adds picnic tables to campground

| December 28, 2021 1:00 AM

Robert Newsom of Troop 141 recently completed his Eagle Scout project — making and delivering four heavy duty picnic tables for Maiden Rock Campground.

Since the campground has no road access, the project was a year in the making. Working with Kyle Lee of the U.S. Forest Service, Newsom obtained permission regarding the design and delivery of the picnic tables.

The tables are extremely heavy and the Forest Service supported this project with the use their boat to transport two at a time from Garfield Bay to Maiden Rock, Kiwanis member Dick Vail said.

While bad weather stymied two previous attempts, a third attempt was successful with beautiful weather and water conditions, Vail said.

Newsom said the idea for the picnic tables as an Eagle Scout project stemmed from family boating and camping trips to Maiden Rock.

Daryle McFadden of the Stella-Jones Company (McFarland Pole) donated the cedar used in these tables. Stella-Jones has been a large supporter of Eagle Scout youth service projects, Vail said.
