Local groups to perform spring concerts

| June 3, 2021 1:00 AM

The Pend Oreille Chorale and Orchestra is alive and well, and will be presenting their free spring concerts at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in Sandpoint.

Performance dates are Friday, June 4, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, June 6, at 2 p.m. A reception will only be on Friday due to a church conflict.

The chorale will be the first half, with pieces from the 16th century to the 21st century.

“The pieces I chose hopefully will elicit a light and positive feeling, but still with meaningful emotion for both singers and audience,” said chorale director Caren Reiner. “We certainly do not need any more stress in our lives."

Even though the group is still small, the chorale members have worked hard to be of service, bringing uplifting music to the community.

Following the chorale portion will be the orchestra under the direction of Mark Reiner. The opening number is the haunting "Quiet City" by Aaron Copland, written in 1940, featuring trumpet soloist Aryan Riener and oboe soloist Chloe Issa. Then comes the world premiere of two movements of the "Violin Concerto" by Mark Reiner. Soloist will be concertmistress Gayle McCutchan.

“This composition has really pushed everyone to higher levels of technique and rhythm. I hope all comes together correctly for the performance,” said Mark Reiner. “The fast movement titled '2020' reflects the turmoil of that year, while I was composing it. The second movement provides a big contrast with sweeping melodies and emotional intensity. The third movement will be played at the December concerts.”

Another soloist, Larry Hanna on French horn, will perform a lovely "Romanze" by Saint-Saëns. Closing the concert will be a rousing and enjoyable Haydn Symphony, "La Reine", composed in 1784 at the height of the classical period.

Residents are invited to mark their calendars for live classical music performed by local musicians who have worked tirelessly through this time of change.

Concerts are free as always; donations are gratefully accepted to keep the groups' musical mission alive, now in their 27th year.
