June 15, 1971 – FIRM HAS LOW BID ON ‘Y’

The Max J. Kuney Co. of Spokane submitted the low bid on the Sandpoint-North highway project, which will eliminate one of the most hazardous areas in the highway system. For over 40 years the junction of U.S. 95 and S.H. 200 north of Sandpoint has seen hundreds, maybe thousands of accidents, causing fatalities, injuries and untold thousands of dollars in property damage. The project includes a 212-foot steel underpass under the S.I. tracks and a 212-foot concrete bridge across Sand Creek. The State Highway Dept. eventually plans a connecting link with the north end of the approach to Sandpoint from the bridge south of the city and a diamond interchange at the site of the planned construction.

CARS COLLIDE ON MOUNTAIN GRADE

A near accident occurred when Dr. W.G. Wendle and John Bolin collided their cars between Trestle creek and Hope, where winding roads are built along the mountain side. Little damage was done, but Bolin’s car bumper was smashed as it struck the doctor’s front wheels. Good fortune was with the men, or both might have come to an untimely end.

BERND SEWER OUT OF COMMISSION

The W.A. Bernd building’s sewer system has been clogged the past week. No blue print of the sewer seems to be on file with the city and the building’s owner is also unable to locate them, so plumbers are at a loss to trace the pipes. When the building was built several years ago, there was no sewage system in town and a private system was installed, connecting it with Sand creek. It is not known whether the sewer was ever connected with the city system. The hotel upstairs has been greatly inconvenienced and Frazier Bros., who occupy the store rooms below, also suffered much, having at times several inches of water in the basement.
