Voters reject WBCSD levy

| March 10, 2021 1:00 AM

With almost all ballots counted by 11 p.m., West Bonner County voters appear to have rejected a $3.4 million supplemental levy.

The levy received 933 no votes, or 53.74 percent, and 803 yes votes, or 46.26 percent. To pass, the levy needed a simple majority.

The levy covers roughly 25% of the West Bonner County School District's budget, school district officials said previously.

To pass, the levy needs a simple majority.

The levy would maintain the district's current $1.47 mill rate per $1,000 of assessed property value, which covers about 25% of the district’s budget, WBCSD officials said.

Although the mill rate has not increased, should the levy pass the district will receive roughly $3.4 million instead of $3 million as they did previously due to an increase in the region’s property values.

Statewide, officials said roughly 80% of school districts in the state run a levy.

"The truth is the state does provide funds to schools, however, it is not enough when you consider how many unfunded mandates our tasked to our schools," Superintendent Paul Anselmo said previously.

Other necessities funded in part by the levy are building maintenance and salaries for classified employees.
