100 Years Ago — 1921

Principal to get pay increase

It is the desire of the school board to have only college graduates employed as high school instructors and normal graduates in the grade school. The salaries of the teachers will be the same as this year with the exception of the principal, whose salary was increased to $1900.

90 Years Ago — 1931

Bodie Canyon notes

It was amusing to see a lot of our inhabitants scratching around in the dirt and making gardens last week during those pretty days. Now today, the 25th, they have their kiddies out in the garden with scoop shovels shoveling the snow off so they can see where they made the last row.

80 Years Ago — 1941

Making mattresses

The mattress training school which is being sponsored by the Cultus Club will be held April 1 in the old manual training building on the high school grounds.

70 Years Ago — 1951

New businesses open

Frank Pagnotta will have the grand opening of his new drive-in ice cream and sandwich shop, the Diamond Drive-In, April 1. Popeye Rose, new proprietor of Ace’s Tavern, will hold a grand opening March 30.

60 Years Ago — 1961

Boxing Jamboree Saturday night

Not since 1955 has there been a boxing squad to represent Priest River. That was the last year the high school included boxing in their athletic program. The Priest River Fire Department decided to sponsor an amateur boxing team and have worked on the program these past few months. The boxers will be ready to put on a smoker Saturday night in the high school gym.

50 Years Ago — 1971

Berberick crowned

Mae Berberic was crowned Miss Priest River XIV at the close of one of the best and most entertaining pageants ever staged by the Panhandle Junior Federated Club. Princesses chosen to reign with her are Shirley Hermes and Esther Edgar. Becky Rose won the Congeniality award.

40 Years Ago — 1981

Little response to road plan

Despite earlier opposition to the proposal, the Priest Lake Chamber of Commerce received little comment on a recent feasibility study between Priest Lake and Sandpoint, a chamber official said.

30 Years Ago — 1991

Letter sent protesting decision

The Priest River Ministerial Association, Northwest Christian Issues, and the Fellowship of Evangelical Pastors in Sandpoint have launched a petition drive to restore prayer to commencement exercises. A letter has also been sent to the district office urging officials to reconsider their decision to eliminate prayer at graduation.

20 Years Ago — 2001

Team ends first year

Pat Karr is proud of his Academic Decathlon team’s accomplishments in its first year of existence, both in area competition and at the state level. “The best thing was, we beat Sandpoint and Coeur d’ Alene. We stomped Sandpoint three times running,” he added.
