National Day of Prayer event planned

SANDPOINT — As in many communities across the county, a prayer event is planned to mark the 70th annual National Day of Prayer on Thursday.

"In churches, parks and on the courthouse steps, citizens will be praying for our nation, government leaders, media, military, schools, churches, business and families," said Janine Shepard of Pray 7B, which is organizing the event.

The community-wide event, which will be attended by local faithful and churches will begin at 11:30 a.m. with music in Farmin Park. The National Day of Prayer observance, which begins at noon, will include an introduction by area pastors, music, the Armed Forces Color Guard, and prayers. The event will also be streamed on Facebook Live so those unable to attend in person can participate.

"It is a great time of unity among the churches," Shepard said in the press release.

Pray 7B will again hold its Adopt-a-Cop program in which residents are asked to adopt local law enforcement and pray for them on a regular basis.

"We want to show our extreme gratitude to our law enforcement for the work they do to keep us safe every day," Shepard said.

At this time, Pray 7B said there is nothing more important that people can do than pray.

Congress established the National Day of Prayer in 1952. This observance is currently held the first Thursday each May when all Americans are encouraged to exercise their religious freedom by gathering publicly to worship and pray.
