Nov. 30, 1921 – 70 MILES OF SNOW AND WIND

“Duck soup,” said W.C. Jaeger of the City garage about a frigid 15-hour auto trip from Spokane during the arctic blizzard that swept the Inland Empire last Monday. Dr. F.G. Wendle, who officiated on the business end of a snowshovel for a good part of the trip, said things which could not be printed, and Leland Johnson, City garage salesman, had crawled so far under the family cookstove after arriving home that he forgot what he had to say by the time of his interview.

Mr. Jaeger went to Spokane early Monday to drive home the new Ford coupe Dr. Wendle ordered. He left Spokane about 1:30. When the weather got bad, Dr. Wendle and Mr. Johnson called Jaeger and agreed to meet him on the road. They left in Mr. Johnson’s car and at the south end of the long wagon bridge met their first difficulty. The doctor shoveled (sic) snow. The storm was on in earnest by the time they reached Rathdrum, where they met Jaeger. The party started for Sandpoint. The doctor shoveled some more snow. In fact he shoveled snow most of the way home.

At Westmond, Johnson ran out of gasoline and took some from Wendle’s new coupe. They all shoveled snow and when he ran out of gas again, they called up the City garage and two men left there, carrying gas and surplus language. The relief car stalled south of the long bridge and they shoveled snow for a quarter mile. When the Johnson car stalled on the hill north of Westmond, the three men climbed aboard the new coupe and made it home, leaving it to the relief crew to bring in the Johnson craft. Their arrival here was about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. “A pleasant time was had by all,” said the doctor. Mr. Jaeger was quoted before. Mr. Johnson’s remarks have been deleted by the censor.
