Bonner County man killed in Saturday accident

A Bonner County man was killed in a Saturday afternoon accident about two miles west of Hope.

Idaho State Police said Royal F. Shields Jr, 78, of Sagle was eastbound on Highway 200 at about 4:28 p.m. in a 2008 GMC Sierra pickup when he lost control and went off the roadway on the northbound shoulder. The vehicle impacted the rock wall, which caused the vehicle to roll over.

Shields, who was wearing a seatbelt, succumbed to his injuries at the scene, ISP officials said.

Next of kin have been notified.

The westbound lane of travel was blocked for approximately two hours.

Shields was a noted architect in Bonner County and a longtime volunteer and Rotarian.
