2021 Newport Autumn Bloom welcomed 100 runners

NEWPORT — A recent Saturday morning runners from all over the Northwest welcomed the chilly, wet skies and competed in the 14th annual Newport Autumn Bloom 5K/10K Run. The Newport High School Cross Country Team, under the coaching of Mike Frederick, used the race as an additional meet on Sept. 18. In addition, three youth runners (under 16 years old) placed within the top three in the Overall 5K categories.

The 2021 Spirit of Autumn Bloom was awarded to Patricia Trout of Spokane. The award recognizes race loyalty, superior attitude, and competitive inspiration for all ages. Race sponsor Keith Campbell presented the 2021 award to the 81-year-old Trout who received a special plaque. Her name will also be added to the perpetual plaque displayed at Newport Community Hospital. With each year, the Foundation will recognize a new winner who, like Trout, embodies the Spirit of Autumn Bloom.

Officers from the City of Newport Police Department and Fire District 4 provided route security for the 100 participants as they raced through downtown Newport. Runners were encouraged along the route by veteran bike marshals (Glennis Stott and Sophia Stott) and more than 50 community volunteers including groups from House of the Lord School and representatives from Newport High School. Race emcee/deejay Keith Campbell fired up the crowd and welcomed them across the finish line. This year’s Newport Autumn Bloom benefits Newport Community Hospital’s Family Birth Center. Race times were verified by Negative Split Timing Services.
