SHS girls soccer shuts out Vikings again
SANDPOINT — Not even a lightning delay could slow down the Sandpoint girls soccer team on Tuesday night.
After a half hour delay due to weather, the Bulldogs took the pitch and continued to take care of business, handing Coeur d'Alene a 3-0 defeat for the second time this season.
SHS kept its bid for a perfect season alive, but assistant coach Alan Brinkmeier said this team isn't keeping track of wins and losses, they are just focused on the next opponent.
"I think this team is more humble than any of the other teams that we've had," he said, "and I don't even know if they know we're 9-0 now. I don't think they think that way. They just want to move forward and I think they all have the same goal in mind of getting to state."
Brinkmeier filled in for head coach Conor Baranski, who recently tested positive for COVID-19.
Brinkmeier said the girls did a great job not letting the delay impact their play.
"They went in the locker room during that delay with the young Strikers team and they talked and sang a couple songs and stayed pumped up," he said. "As soon as they came out, it was like they were on the field the whole time."
Kylie Williams scored the first goal in the 26th minute. Just a few moments later, Kate McGregor found the back of the net on a free kick to give SHS a 2-0 halftime lead.
In the 57th minute, Hannah Harvey buried a penalty kick goal.
Brinkmeier said the seniors were strong all night, particularly McGregor, Piper Frank and Erin Eddy.
"Kate, Piper and Erin stepped up and played a great game," he said. "Probably one of Kate's best games on the backline."
Goalkeeper Lilliana Brinkmeier made four saves.
"Our goalie stepped up and made a couple big saves to keep us up 2-0 and then just the momentum kept going in our direction," Brinkmeier said. "A great team effort all around."
Sandpoint (9-0, 7-0 IEL) hosts Lakeland at 4:30 p.m. Thursday for Senior Night. The team can wrap up the 5A-4A Inland Empire League title with a win.
