FSPW sets scholarship deadline

| April 1, 2022 1:00 AM

For over a decade, Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness’s scholarship program has rewarded local high school seniors for their creativity and love for the wild.

This year, scholarships will be gifted to eight graduating seniors in Sanders, Lincoln, and Bonner Counties. The awards will go to the students who submit the most inspiring essays about exploring the wilderness.

The story submissions can cover a range of personal adventures – from fishing and hunting to horseback riding and hiking.

“There is so much that can be learned from hiking a mountain peak or hunting for food to feed your family,” expressed Phil Hough, Executive director at FSPW. “We want to celebrate and honor the youth in our community who have the bravery and dedication to exploring our wild backyard.”

Winners will receive a check for $250 to go towards further education. This scholarship has no minimum GPA and does not require a commitment to a college. The only requirement is a true love for exploring our wild backyard.

Students attending the following schools are eligible to apply: Troy, Noxon, Thompson Falls, Clark Fork, Sandpoint, Lake Pend Oreille, Forrest M. Bird Charter and Priest River Lamanna high schools.

Applications are due by Monday, April 11. Check with your high school guidance counselor for more information.

In addition to the cash reward, winning students will also have the chance to be featured on our podcast and contribute to our Voices in the Wilderness storytelling project. Check scotchmanpeaks.org/news/ to see winning essays from previous years.
