NURSING SCHOLARSHIP FUND CREATED

A scholarship fund has been organized by Mrs. Maryetta Brodkord Mayer of Los Angeles, in memory of Mrs. Betty L. Moon, late wife of Bud Moon of Sandpoint. The scholarship was created to fulfill a moral obligation felt by Mrs. Mayer. A young Kootenai girl, Maryetta Brodkord graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1938, with a great desire for a nursing career. Financing in the middle 1930s would not allow her to enter nurses training. A decision was made by the Tom Palmer family to help Maryetta achieve her desire. Through their aid and encouragement, in 1941 Maryetta graduated from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing at Lewiston. Because of their efforts in her life and her strong feeling to be of service to her fellow man, Mrs. Mayer decided to create the memorial fund for Betty Moon, who was the daughter of Tom and Hazel Palmer of Kootenai. The fund also will include the memory of Thomas Palmer, who died in 1950.

“COMMODORE” DOWNS PASSES

The panhandle of Idaho lost one of its most picturesque pioneers last week with the passing of “Commodore” Robert Downs, who carried mail to Cabinet from 1867-1872, and had freighted and done prospecting around Lake Pend d’Oreille. He lived alone on Pack river for years. Some weeks ago, Downs told Review readers what became of the “Mary Moody” and the “Cabinet,” early steamers on the lake. He said they were dismantled and freighted from Lakeview overland to the Snake river prior to 1880.
