BONNERS FERRY — The Priest River baseball team opened up 3A Intermountain League play on Wednesday with a loss to Bonners Ferry at Bonners Ferry High School.

The Badgers swept the Spartans 10-0, 14-0.

Priest River struggled at the plate in Game One, only managing to get one hit. Throughout the two games, the Spartans combined for two hits and struck out 12 times.

“We just couldn’t put the ball in play,” Priest River baseball coach Mark Schultz said. “Striking out 17 times is a lot; however, 15 out of the 17 attacked strike three.”

Bonners Ferry pitcher Teigan Banning struck out 12 in Game One.

In the bottom of the first during Game 2 the Badgers led 8-0 and continued to add on to its lead until it was put to an end due to the 10-run rule.

Blake Rice hit a triple down the left field line. He’d go on to score on a passed ball to extend Bonners Ferry’s lead to 3-0.

At the end of the first, Bo Bateman hit a 2-run RBI single to put the Badgers ahead 8-0.

Game one also got called due to the 10-run rule, but this one was more of a slow burn.

Bonners Ferry took charge of the game in the bottom of the first, putting up three runs.

The Badgers added one run in the bottom of the second but were held scoreless in the third. They then went on a six-run spurt in the fourth and fifth inning to take the 10-0 lead.

The young Spartans also committed 10 errors between the two games.

However, Schultz said his young team is starting to grasp the nuances of baseball more as they step onto the field.

“We had some mental mistakes and those are going to happen,” Schultz said. “But we also did some good things. Everything is sinking in a little bit at a time.”
