Girls take first

Junior Steffie Pavey and freshman Eric McCracken took firsts in running events, and ran legs of the winning 4x400 relay team for the lady Spartans, which finished second at the 10-team Priest River Invite Saturday.

Loggers event held

The annual logger day event was held at Nordman April 20. Overall winners were Men’s: Cooks Logging: 2, Priest Lake Lumber: 3; Don Pettit Logging; Womens: Malloy Veneer, 2: Pettit Forest Products, 3: Priest Lake Lumber.

30 Years Ago — 1992

Federal safety inspectors are checking into operations at DAW Forest Products after an employee was injured at the mill. Lonnie Teal, who works in debarker cleanup at DAW, fell at least 12 feet from the conveyor area onto a concrete surface April 1. He sustained head injuries, broke his left wrist, and crushed his right elbow. 

40 Years Ago — 1982

Prom nerves

You can tell that prom time is coming near because the girls are getting frantic (along with mothers who are reliving the sick feeling in the pits of their stomachs because their daughters haven’t been invited), and the boys are walking around with that glazed look in their eyes because they don’t have the nerve to ask the girls (or they don’t have the money). What else is new?

50 Year Ago — 1972

Berberick among finalists

Mrs. Eddie Perin received a call from her daughter, Mae Berberick, in Portland, who had the exciting news that she was among the eight finalists for the title of Queen of the Portland May Festival. The eight finalists were chosen from among 80 contestants. The winner will be announced tonight.

70 Years Ago — 195

Spartans eke out win

The Priest River High School track team managed to eke out a dual meet win from the Sandpoint High School team, 62-56. Howard Fiedler of Priest River won point honors with 11. Leonard Plaster score 9 for Sandpoint.

80 Years Ago — 1942

Band to be heard over KHQ

The Priest River School Band, under the direction of Adair Hilligoss, will be heard over KHQ Spokane Saturday morning, May 2, from 9:30-9:45.

90 Years Ago — 1932

Shingle mill coming

C. E. Douglas, W. A. Ross, and John Martin, shingle mill men, are in Priest River this week making final arrangements for the shingle mill to be established here. The site will be along the Great Northern right of way just south of Wisconsin and Montgomery streets, on the south side of the railroad track.

100 Years Ago — 1920

New building to be built

Monday morning a force of men under the direction of Peter J. Young started work on moving the two small houses on the northwest corner of Main and High streets, preparatory to the erection of a new modern business block there. C.W. Beardmore of the Beardmore mill will be the owner of the new hollow brick building.
