PRIEST RIVER — The Priest River softball team was able to combat its 14 errors with a season-high 20 hits in game one of its double header against Intermountain League opponent Bonners Ferry.

The Spartans swept the Badgers 24-18, 18-8.

“The errors didn’t hurt us as much as they had earlier in the season,” Priest River softball coach Ron Kruse said. “We were hitting the ball all day long, even at the bottom of the order.”

Lilly Freitas had her best showing of the season by going 10-for-11 at the plate with three doubles and two triples.

“This was the best game of her career,” Kruse said. “She hit the heck out of the ball.”

Freitas also took control of the mound in the doubleheader.

In the opener she came in during the fifth inning and gave up two runs on no hits and struck out four.

She got the start during the night cap allowing four runs on four hits and striking out eight.

Kruse also highlighted the base running for Priest River. During the Spartans 21-20 loss to Troy High School on Thursday, the Trojans caught them on a triple play.

This made base running a point of emphasis for today’s game.

“We had a lot of base running mistakes (against Troy),” Kruse said. “That’s all we worked on leading up to today and that helped a lot.”

The Spartans improve to 3-13 overall and 3-5 in IML play. Priest River next plays Kellogg on Tuesday, April 26.
