100 Years Ago — 1922

Water mains being lowered

Marshal Binkley and a crew of men are lowering the water main on the street in front of Anthony Jilek’s residence. The mains were laid before the streets were graded. When the streets were brought to grade, the mains were buried in places not over three inches. During the past severe winter, those mains froze. They are being lowered all over town where grading has brought them close to the surface.

Nordman Notes

We were gleefully telling Art Hagman that the “Literary Digest” said the Democrats had given Mr. Hoover another four-year lease on the White House. Mr. Hagman looked at us and said, “I haven’t signed that least yet.” Maybe we Republicans will have to get in and work yet.

80 Years Ago — 1942

Bluebacks planted

Game Warden Costello reports that they have now planted about 155,000 bluebacks in Priest Lake. The fish were of fingerling size and were planted at the Outlet and Bartow Island

70 Years Ago — 1952

Golf club opens

The formal opening of the River Crest golf Club will be held April 27 at 10 a.m. An opening-day handicap will be held for men and women and two engraved trophies will be awarded. Membership fees are $25 per year for a husband-wife combination.

60 Years Ago — 1962

Cougar hunts successful

In winding up their cougar hunt for the past winter, G. Winslow and John Warner report having bagged eight cougars. One of three kittens was taken alive. The boys put in 46 days on the chase, camping out often where night overtook them. A great deal of their hunting was confined to the territory around the head of the lake where cougar seem most numerous.

Teacher elected

Louisa Ford, Spanish teacher at Priest River High School, was elected secretary-treasurer of a newly-organized chapter of foreign language teachers of Spanish and Portuguese on April 22 in Capitol High School in Boise.

40 Years Ago — 1982

“Car Squash” starting

The efforts of students of Priest River, Newport and Cusick high schools are being combined to finish locating and obtaining releases of abandoned cars for scrap metal. Student bodies of each high school will receive a proportionate share of the money paid for the metal, according to the number of cars coming from each area.

30 Years Ago — 1992

Royalty named

Royalty at the 1992 Priest River Lamanna High prom included senior prince, Jim Bob Coleman; senior princess, Chelsea Centorbi; queen, Shanelle Flavel and king, Jeremy Brennan.

Injury accident reported

Michael J. Denuty, former editor of the Priest River Times, now with the Newport Miner, was seriously injured Friday night after a rollover accident in north Spokane County, the Washington State Patrol reported.

10 Years Ago — 2012

Earth Day cleans up

Over 40 people turned out to help with Priest River’s Earth Day on Saturday. The group cleaned up at PRJH, PHLHS, and downtown area before enjoying a free hot dog lunch. Other groups did highway cleanup and PRE cleaned up, too.
