| August 17, 2022 1:00 AM

NEWPORT — The community is invited to the first gardening education event to be held at the Newport Community Garden.

For the Aug. 25 event, participants will be getting down in the dirt to talk about soil basics for gardening with Alex Case-Cohen, manager of the Pend Oreille Conservation District. This will be a one-hour outdoor workshop from 11 a.m. to noon at the garden, located in the backyard of the Newport Library, 116 S. Washington Ave.

While not required, RSVP is requested by emailing Mary Malone at mmalone@pocd.org, or call 509-671-3110 (please leave a message if there is no answer). This is a free workshop, though donations of non-perishable items for the food bank are welcome.

The garden is a collaborative project between members of the Pend Oreille County Library District, Friends of the Pend Oreille County Library District, the local WSU Extension and Master Gardeners, SNAP-Ed, and the Pend Oreille Conservation District. Funding has been provided through grants from SNAP-Ed, the Innovia Foundation, Catholic Charities, and an Urban Agriculture Conservation Grant through the National Association of Conservation Districts, as well as fundraising efforts by the Friends of the Library.
