Students honored for academic achievement

Sandpoint Elks Lodge No. 1376 has announced students of the month for the last couple of months for the Lake Pend Oreille School District.

Students for December at Sandpoint High School are Azalea Gonzales and Andrew VanCorbach. Selected at Clark Fork High School for January is Katelyn Matteson.

To be selected as an Elks student of the month, students must meet guidelines for character, citizenship, service, scholarship and leadership.

The Elks actively seek to reward youth through many different programs including scholarship awards, Hoop Shoot tournaments, dictionary donations to third graders, drug awareness programs and many other activities and programs.

Sandpoint Elks Lodge award thousands of dollars in scholarships and local students also received an additional money in state and national Elk scholarships. The Elks are the third largest awarder of scholarships in the county and several students have received large scholarships from the state and national level of Elks.

Katelyn Matteson

The daughter of Shane and Sarah Matteson, Katelyn Matteson was named the student of the month for January at Clark Fork High School.

Matteson has played basketball and volleyball for Clark Fork all four years of high school and is currently the varsity basketball team captain. She has received all league honors for basketball and volleyball.

The CFHS senior said she plans to continue basketball in college as it is her biggest passion.

During her junior year at CFHS, Matteson was named an Idaho top scholar.

She plans to go to college for a degree in kinesiology, specifically sports management or sports medicine.

She has a grade point average of 3.91 and taking college classes with North Idaho College.

Azalea Gonzales

The daughter of Manuel and Cristina Gonzales, Azalea Gonzales has been named a student of the month for December for Sandpoint High School.

An aspiring musician and avid writer, Azalea Gonzales is a high school senior currently attending SHS and is ranked 16th in her class.

Gonzales has played volleyball all four years, was the JV captain her sophomore year, and was given a "Best Christian Example" award during the same year. With a 4.0 GPA under her belt, Azalea plans to go to the University of Idaho to pursue a degree in education (with an emphasis in English) in order to achieve her goal of becoming a high school English teacher.

Andrew VanCorbach

The son of Annie and Willard VanCorbach, Andrew VanCorbach has been named an Elks Student of the month for December at Sandpoint High School.

A devoted student, Andrew VanCorbach is ranked sixth in his class with a grade point average of 4.29.

He has participated in Business Professionals of America for all four years of high school, competing at a national level in business and information technology related events. Both during and after school, he works for the LPOSD technology department as a technology intern repairing school district computers. After high school, he plans to either enlist in the Navy or join the NROTC program at the University of Idaho.
