16U NI Lakers start season 2-1 at Memorial Day tourney

The Peak Sand & Gravel North Idaho Lakers 16U team opened its season with a Memorial Day round robin tournament.

The Lakers finished the event 2-1, with its only loss being a tight 14-11 ball game against Mt. Spokane on Sunday.

The Lakers were slated to face Mt. Spokane for a second time on Sunday; however, the game was postponed due to heavy rain on Sunday afternoon. Their championship game will be held on a later date.

The Peak Sand & Gravel North Idaho Lakers 16U defeated Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen Idaho to open the tournament 6-2 on Saturday, May 28.

Coeur d’Alene got on the board first after Van Linge drew a walk, which scored one run.

The Lakers evened things up at two in the bottom of the third inning when Chase Sanroman doubled on a 0-1 count, scoring two runs.

The North Idaho Lakers pulled away for good with two runs in the fourth inning.

In the fourth, Medeiros doubled on a 3-2 count, scoring one run. Parker Reichart was next to bat, he hit an RBI single.

The Lakers notched three runs in the third inning, all three of which came from an RBI double by Chase Sanroman.

Dallen Williams was the winning pitcher for the North Idaho Lakers.

The righthander allowed one hit and zero runs over two and a third innings, striking out four and walking zero. Blake Atterberry and Chase Sanroman entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

In its second game of the tournament, the North Idaho Lakers cruised to a 10-1 win over the Northern Lakes Mountaineers.

Jacob Hansen drew a walk to score the Lakers’ first run of the ball game.

Their biggest inning came in the third, scoring five runs. Both Mason Little and Sage Medeiros notched singles during the inning.

Cole Sanroman was the winning pitcher. He allowed one hit and zero runs over two and a third innings. He added three strikeouts.

The Lakers finished game number two with 10 hits.

On Monday, the Lakers fell to Mt. Spokane 16U team 14-11.

Despite the loss, the Lakers tallied nine hits compared to Mt. Spokane’s 10.

Mt Spokane scored four runs in the fourth inning to take the lead and from there, they never looked back. The Lakers tried their best for a comeback in the sixth inning, where they scored six runs.

Soren Caprio, Medeiros, Dallen Williams, Chase Sanroman, Cole Sanroman, Jorden Tyler, and Parker Reichart all drove in runs during the sixth. The game was ultimately called in this inning due to it reaching the two hour time limit.

“I couldn’t be happier with how our guys played in their debut performance,” The Peak Sand & Gravel North Idaho Lakers 16U coach Ken Oler said. “We have a solid balance of veteran players that helped us win a district championship last season along with a very talented and hungry group of newcomers.”
