10 best moments from the 2022 spring sports season

As the seniors throw up their caps for graduation, it is time to reflect on the 2022 spring sports season.

Here are the 10 best moments from each team in the region during the 2022 season in no particular order.

10.) Priest River baseball 10, Riverside 4, Saturday, March 19.

The Spartans opened up their season with a doubleheader split against Riverside High School.

It won the opener 10-4 with Priest River pitching duo Everett Hannah and Nadin Thompson striking out nine batters.

9.) Priest River golf @ state golf meet, Tuesday, May 17.

The Spartans boys’ golf team finished third at the Class 3A Idaho state golf tournament with Luke Butler placing sixth as an individual with a score of 157.

8.) Priest River softball sweep of Bonners Ferry, Saturday, April 23.

At the end of the season, Lilly Freitas received a share of the MVP award for the Intermountain League.

Freitas showed why she deserved to be recognized following her 10-for-11 performance in the Spartans’ 24-18, 18-8 sweep of Bonners Ferry.

She also continued to be a reliable arm on the mound, striking out 12 batters throughout the contest.

7) Priest River, Clark Fork, Sandpoint @ State track Meet, May 20-21

All three track teams excelled at the state track meet on May 20-21.

Sandpoint’s Rusty Lee broke his own school record three times in the 110 and 300-meter hurdles.

Priest River earned six medals at the Idaho Class 3A state track meet, its most since 2012.

Junior Matyus McLain earned three medals at state, which is the most medals won by an individual at Priest River since 2010.

Clark Fork newcomer Savannah Weymouth earned a silver medal in the pole vault event.

An honorable mention for Clark Fork has to be its North Star League Championship win on Saturday, May 7.

It was the Wampus Cats’ first league title win since 2005.

6.) Sandpoint golf @ District tournament, Monday, May 9.

The Sandpoint girls golf team once again took home the 4A Inland Empire League crown.

Joey Aexel also earned a state bid with his performance at districts with a score of 82.

5.) Sandpoint tennis 12, Lakeland 0, Wednesday, May 4.

Kent Anderson has been coaching tennis at Sandpoint High School for over a decade, never seeing a 12-0 score.

This win gave the Bulldogs tons of momentum heading into their eventual league championship victory.

4.) Sandpoint softball 8, Moscow 6, Tuesday, May 3

Magic was in the air with the 1992 Sandpoint softball team watching the current Bulldogs defeat Moscow 8-6.

Sandpoint was trailing 6-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth when it scored three runs to take the lead and the eventual victory.

All-league pitcher Kivia Barlow pitched a complete game, allowing six runs on seven hits and striking out five.

3.) Sandpoint baseball 11, Pocatello 2, Saturday, May 21

The Bulldogs had an amazing turn around during the midway point of their season that led to them winning the Idaho Class 4A state consolation championship against Pocatello.

Sandpoint wasted little time getting on the board, scoring six runs in the first inning.

Jack Zimmerman and Jack Ringer took care of pitching duties allowing a combined two hits and eight strikeouts.

2.) Sandpoint boys lacrosse 15, Immaculate Conception 10, Wednesday, May 11

The boys’ lacrosse team ended its regular season with a five-point victory against Palouse league foe Immaculate Conception from Post Falls.

Several Bulldogs played different positions than they’re used to and still managed to notch the convincing victory.

1.) Sandpoint girls lacrosse 11, Mead 3, Monday, May 2.

What better way to go out on senior night than with an eight-point victory?

Despite a high foul total of 33, Sandpoint was still able to accomplish this feat with excellent defensive pressure.

Sandpoint goalie Sam Brown notched 15 saves on 26 shots.
