LIONS READY BEST-EVER CELEBRATION

The Sandpoint Lions have scheduled what promises to be the greatest local Independence Day celebration of all time, scattered out over four days. There will be stock car races Saturday and Sunday afternoons at the Panhandle Raceway in Colburn. The street dance is at 9 p.m. Monday in downtown Sandpoint. Tuesday, a 5 a.m. salute to the 4th will signal opening of the day’s celebration. The kids’ parade is at 9:30 a.m. and the main parade at 10:30. Al Abromeit, past president of the Sandpoint Lions, is this year’s parade marshal. Abromeit has been a working member of the club since its charter 19 years ago. The main parade will be followed by kids’ events at the old Farmin School site. Time trials for the Greater Northwest championship motorcycle scrambles are at 1 p.m. with races at 3:00, all at the old rodeo grounds, just off the Great Northern road. Amateur boxing is on the program for 7 p.m. at War Memorial field, followed by a $1000 fireworks display. A 1972 Maverick coupe will be presented to its new owner between the boxing and fireworks.

FIRES WELL UNDER CONTROL

Notwithstanding the earliest dry season in many years, the forest fire danger is not threatening thus far. The Kaniksu forest has had 19 fires this season and the Pend d’Oreille forest nine fires. On the Kaniksu, 630 acres of national forest land has burned over and 175 acres of privately owned land inside forests. The loss on the Pend d’Oreille has been trifling.

PIGEONS MAKE GOOD TIME

After notifying T.L. Gibson, station agent of the Northern Pacific, that carrier pigeons for release here were consigned to him, the Homing Pigeon society of Seattle sent the birds out on the wrong road and they landed at the Great Northern station here, where Agent W.B. French arranged for their release Sunday morning. Word from the Seattle society states that the birds made the trip home in 5 hours and 40 minutes.

BAD FIRE AT McARTHUR SUNDAY

Fire of unknown origin on Sunday afternoon entirely destroyed the Odd Fellow’s hall at McArthur and the store stock of Otto Nelson, who occupied a part of the structure. The flames were discovered by neighbors, but efforts to save the building were futile and nothing was saved from it. The work of neighbors, however, prevented the spread of the fire to nearby structures.
