A few thoughts on debt and politics

| March 13, 2022 1:00 AM

Separate ARPA meeting articles (Daily Bee, Feb. 19) had some information that offers a different perspective. There was a mention of trust in the current administration. Reminder, Trump lied to the American people over 30,000 times in four years and continues his pathological dishonesty to this day.

A mention of vaccine mandates. So what. Most people have insurance for health, autos, home, life, plus we have rule-of-law mandates for a host of other activities society deems necessary. Getting a vaccine and wearing a mask is good insurance and possibly freedom against covid, flu, polio, measles, pneumonia, etc. Vaccines are not 100% effective but without a high percentage of vaccinated people, society will continue to suffer economic and human costs.

There was mention of extra burden to the U.S. debt. I’m sure these numbers are approximate, but Trump added $7 billion in four years despite tax cuts for the rich and corporations, plus tariffs. Obama added $9 billion, and Bush 2 added $6 billion with tax cuts and fighting two wars and sending us into the 2007 recession. Yes, we’ve had stimulus packages and COVID, and the deficit will continue to grow with Biden.
