SANDPOINT — Selkirk Fire's team finished in the top third of the 134 teams taking part in the Scott Firefighter Stairclimb last weekend in Seattle.

Held on March 13 this year, the annual event raises funds with the ultimate goal of finding a cure for blood cancer. As part of the stairclimb, participants must race up the 69 flights of stairs, 1,356 steps and 788 feet of elevation gain of Seattle’s Columbia Center — while wearing roughly 50 pounds of firefighter gear and a self-contained breathing apparatus.

Selkirk's Clint Frank earned a spot in top 50 for men and Tennille Toussaint placed in the top 10 for women. The local team had seven members complete the climb and were joined by three Northside members.

Also helping out was Jason Coleman, a volunteer who is the team's bottle changer for several years, Toussaint said.

The team has raised $6,350 to date, including Ting, which donated $1,200. A fundraiser at Super 1 in February raised $2,609. In total, the event has raised $1.9 million.

The Scott Firefighter Stairclimb is the world’s largest on-air stairclimb competition, according to its website. The money raised through sponsorships, individual and department fundraising, and entry fees directly supports the mission of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Teams are required to raise at least $300 per person prior to the event.
