LEWISTON — The Sandpoint golf team competed at the Lewiston Invitational on Monday, March 21, at the Bryden Canyon Golf Course. The girls maintained momentum with a third place finish, scoring 394 as a team.

Raegan Samuels, in her first ever tournament, shot a 124.

“She went out there with a clear head,” Sandpoint golf coach Michael Deprez said. “She came away more optimistic than pessimistic by the end of the round.”

Just about every other girl on Sandpoint’s golf team had competed in junior golf before the high school level, so having Samuels get up to speed rather quickly was huge for the pod.

Audrey Sheffler led the girls' pod with a 95.

Demi Driggs also shot under 100 for the round, shooting a 97.

During these tournaments, Deprez likes to keep an eye on where his team stacks up against the 4A Inland Empire League.

“Lakeland was at a different tournament from us, so I’ll have to get results from that after we get back,” Deprez said. “But as for Moscow, the girls finished strokes ahead of them and the boys were only seven strokes behind. We’re in good shape.”

The boys finished in sixth place and were without Jacob Gove.

Gove was in Florida visiting some family, so the other Bulldogs got a chance to compete in the varsity lineup.

Arie Vandenberg finished with a score of 99 and Koda Hartley ended up with a score of 95.

“For them to shoot in the 90s at their first tournament of the season is huge,” Deprez said. “All these other teams have been practicing outside and we haven’t really been able to do that. So for them to hit the grass for the first time and do so well is impressive.”

Joey Axel, Merek Bauck, and Jake Samuels all shot in the 80s.

Axel paced the Bulldogs with an 83.

“ (Jake) Samuels and (Merek) Bauck have improved so much from last year to this year,” Deprez said. “They were really competitive.”

Next up for Sandpoint is an open event at the Links Golf Course on Wednesday, March 30.
