The Sandpoint track team wrapped up its season with the 2022 Class 4A Idaho State track meet on Saturday, May 21.

Four days after the kids returned home from Boise, the team had its end-of-the year banquet where it gave away its end-of-the season awards.

The most notable award up for grabs was the David Lyon Award for the most valuable track and field athlete.

Coaches take into consideration points earned at meets and overall character and contribution to the team.

To no one's surprise, for the boys, the winner of this award was Rusty Lee. Lee notched a second place finish in the 300 meter hurdles and 110 meter hurdles at the state meet. He also broke his own school record on two different occasions during the state meet.

He added a fourth place finish in both the high jump and the medley relay.

For the girls, Maren Davidson won the award. Davidson earned a sixth place finish in the 800 meter race at the state meet with a time of 2:18.22.

It was also no surprise that the throwers of the year were sophomore Ivy Smith and senior Will Hurst.

Both athletes were staples of Sandpoint’s track lineup this year, with both medaling at state.

Hurst finished second in the discus event and sixth in the shot put.

Smith notched a fourth place finish in the shot put with a throw of 36 feet and four and a half inches.

Erika Edmundson and Klein Fragoso earned the pole vault coaches award.

Edmundson placed second in the pole vault during the state meet. Fragoso didn’t place at the state tournament, but he has a bright future as a member of Sandpoint’s track team.

Destiny Lyons and Keyan Strock earned the sprint coaches award with Luke McCorkle and Ava Mazzilli earning the jumps coaches award.

Finally, the distance coaches award went to four athletes who were very consistent for the Bulldogs this season.

For the girls, Megan Oulman and Ara Clark were recognized. Oulman capped off her senior year with a sixth place finish in the 3200 meter race.

Ben Ricks and Trey Clark received the honors for the boys.

Both athletes didn’t place at the state track meet but were essential to the Bulldogs lineup during the 2022 season.
