SHS golfers have strong first day at state

SANDPOINT — At the end of the first day of the state golf tournament, Sandpoint's girls sit in third place and the boys team is sixth.
The tournament continues today at the Sage Lakes Golf Course in Idaho Falls.
"I could not be more proud or excited about the state of Sandpoint golf," Sandpoint coach Mike Deprez said.
On the girls team, Alexa Tuinstra and Taylor Mire each had personal bests, scoring a 76 and a 75, respectively, on the par 70 course. Mire had back-to-back birdies and Tuinstra had an eagle.
"They had their own highlight real going on out there," Deprez said.
Raegan Samuels shot a 93, shaving 40 strokes off her previous appearance at the tournament. In addition, Demi Driggs is starting to swing well and Audrey Sheffler is poised for a run on the tournament's second day, Deprez said.
It was a similar script for the boys team as Jake Samuels shot 74, four strokes over par. Joey Aexel wasn't far behind, shooting 79. The Bulldogs also saw consistent scoring from Rusty Lee and Austin Dillon, Deprez said. Freshman Micah Young shot an 87.
The boys team is in good position and is "within striking distance of fourth" if the golfers do as well, or a stroke or two better, on the tournament's second day, said Deprez.
"I'm ecstatic about how well they played," he added.
