Aug. 3, 1973 – PROUDLY WE SALUTE…

Cadet Joseph F. Robinson, 20, 1970 SHS graduate and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob W.L. Robinson, Sandpoint, did practical work in military leadership at the Army R.O.T.C. advanced summer camp at Ft. Lewis, Wash. He is a student at U of I.

Pvt. E2 Roger A. Brown is stationed in Germany with the 293rd Engr. Bn., after basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. Pvt. Brown, a 1972 SHS graduate, joined the Army in Feb. 1973. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard L. Brown, Sandpoint.

PLAN FIRE PROTECTION AT MIRROR LAKE

Dry weather, high temperatures and the lack of moisture promise that the fire danger will remain extreme for some days yet. Aware of the fire threat, Sandpoint Kiwanis Club plans to have a pumper in Mirror Lake for the family carnival and turkey BBQ Aug. 12. Initially the floating pumper will be used to wet down the area to control dust and fire danger. A work party Tuesday completed forms for the new building. The concrete slab will be poured Friday.

GIRL SCOUTS TAKE CAMPING TRIP

Five girls from Girl Scout Troop 165 had a three day canoe and camping trip to Samowen last week. Patty Brown, Nancy Buck, Jennifer Calkins, Darlene Nordgaarden and Robin Krum all received first class awards around the campfire at Samowen. Leader Mrs. Gaylord Nordgaarden accompanied the girls.

Aug. 3, 1948 – RESTAURANT REOPENS

The Fountain Cafe [226 N. First], closed early in the summer when work began on the city streets, was reopened last Wednesday by Delbert Weaver, owner. The Weavers had returned from Louisiana and middle western trips prior to its opening.

JULY RAINFALLS SET ALL-TIME RECORD

July’s precipitation of 2.5 inches set an all-time record. Previous high was 1.97 inches in 1912. The average for July is .69 inches. Heavy rainfall has hurt hay crops especially for those unable to get their first cutting in. Wet weather has delayed winter wheat harvesting, while some has been knocked to the ground by the excessive moisture. On the other hand, pastures are the best ever seen in this district.

RIDE ‘EM, COWBOY!

Although Dick Senft’s third annual Sandpoint rodeo wound up in a pouring rainstorm Sunday afternoon, the show went on and spectators who lasted out the dripping skies got their money’s worth in wild west thrills. Largest attendance was Saturday night when the stands were filled to near capacity.

LANDMARK CONDEMNED

The old building at the east end of Bridge street bridge, the early day landmark condemned several months ago by the city council at the suggestion of Fire Chief C.N. Simon, who deemed it a fire hazard, is being torn down by the owner, Walter Jones.
