June 22, 1973 – ALERT NEWSBOY!

Shortly after 6 a.m. Tuesday, Sandpoint firemen were called to the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Boyer and Main [in 2023, United Methodist Church] to fight a blaze which was kept restricted to a corner of the church’s welfare center. Fire Chief Wade Brown credited the alertness of newspaper carrier Dave Arnold Jr., 10, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Arnold, 1323 Superior, with preventing more extensive damage. Young Arnold discovered the fire and roused a neighborhood resident near Boyer and Main, who reported the blaze at 6:10 a.m.

Big Kamloops rainbows are beginning to strike occasionally now and angling for cutthroats, Dolly Vardens, and silver is improving constantly.

TWO BOATS DAMAGED

Partially submerged piling just beginning to come close to the surface of the water early this week brought grief to two boats. A large boat belonging to the coast and geodetic survey ran atop a piling near the Northern Pacific bridge and had to be pulled off. A 48-foot boat belonging to L.E. Welter, Granite Creek, rammed a hole through the bottom of its planking when it ran onto two pilings close together. Fred Kennedy of Kenmor Marina towed it to the dock before it sank. Boatsmen are warned to watch out for piling and partially submerged deadheads which may have changed location during high water.
