Shea will represent all of us on library board

| May 4, 2023 1:00 AM

Watching the current library board election campaigns, a distinct theme has been showing up again and again.

Overwhelmingly, the books on lists being circulated for restriction reflect LGBTQIA+ gender identity themes. What I can't get Stacy Rodriguez to answer is "Are all gender identity books in question - or just the LGBTQIA+ ones?”

I’ll take "And Tango Makes 3" as an example. A true story about two male penguins raising a chick in the Central Park Zoo is questionable? What about "Jesus and my Gender"? Is that one also under consideration? As of this writing, I still haven't seen an answer - I wonder why?

That begs the question - what if you have a tween/teen who comes out or identifies as LGBTQIA+? What if they want a book that reflects their experiences? Do you look them in the face and tell them "Sorry, you are obscene - we will have to first get permission?" With the information at hand, that is really the only conclusion one could reach — if Stacy gets her way.

But — there is a better way. Vote for Susan Shea. She has a proven track record at the library, stands for everyone's First Amendment rights, and agrees with equality for everyone, regardless of orientation.
