Tribe donates sign to community garden

NEWPORT – The Newport Community Garden will soon be sporting a beautiful new metal sign, courtesy of the Kalispel Tribe of Indians and Kalispel Metal Works.

“The Newport Community Garden Committee is so grateful for the Tribe’s charitable donation, as well as to all of those who have helped make this garden possible,” said Mary Malone with the Pend Oreille County Weed Board, who designed the sign.

The Weed Board is one of the many agencies that have worked together to design, create and implement the Community Garden. The Committee is made up of representatives from the Pend Oreille County Weed Board, Conservation District, SNAP. Ed, Pend Oreille County Library District and Friends of the Library, as well as WSU Extension Services and Master Gardeners, all of whom are pleased to add the Kalispel Tribe of Indians to the list of community sponsors of the garden project. Funding for the garden has been provided through grants from SNAP-Ed, the Innovia Foundation, Catholic Charities, and an Urban Agriculture Conservation Grant through the National Association of Conservation Districts, as well as fundraising efforts by the Friends of the Library.

Since the grand opening of the garden last summer, the committee has hosted monthly presentations and hands-on events at the garden, in the library and elsewhere in the community. Events can be found online at POCLD.org/events. Next up is a planting day at 10 a.m. on June 5, which will be open to the community. Reservations are not required for this event.
