Wanted suspect captured after chase

In the evening hours of Nov. 19, a wanted man out of Spokane, Wash., was taken into custody following a chase that started in Bonner County.

Kootenai County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the area of U.S. 95 and Granite Loop Cutoff for an agency assist as Bonner County Sheriff’s Office and Idaho State Police were in active pursuit of a stolen vehicle.

ISP troopers deployed spike strips, which caused the vehicle to come to a stop near Granite Loop Cutoff Road. After the suspect exited the vehicle and fled on foot, KCSO deputies, including a K9 unit, responded to the area and helped establish a perimeter.

A K9 track led to the area where Zachary J. Hawthorne, 37, who was ultimately taken into custody without further incident. Hawthorne was booked into the Bonner County Jail.

KCSO officials said they were thankful for the great working relationship with neighboring agencies, and commended the other agencies for their teamwork and for establishing a quick perimeter. 

Those actions resulted in the quick apprehension of Hawthorne, which ultimately restored safety to commuting motorists.
