BOMB TEAM FLOWN IN FOR DISPOSAL

A team of demolition experts was flown in from Salt Lake City to handle what Sheriff Bob Wilcox called “an explosive situation.” When F.M. Shull of Lightning Creek reported that he found dynamite in an old cabin near the Clark Fork Ranger Station, George Hicks and sheriff’s deputy George Woods investigated, finding the dynamite in a bad state of deterioration. The three-man demolition team was taken Friday to the site on the southwest side of Antelope Mountain, where they carried each stick outside and soaked it with acetone to neutralize the explosive charge. The sticks were then burned. Deputy Woods said the shack contained about 600 lbs. of sodium nitrate and two cases of 75 percent dynamite, roughly equal to 1,200 sticks of the more common 40 percent dynamite. It is thought the dynamite was left in the shed when mining operations in the area ceased. Antelope Mtn. was one of the first areas settled in North Idaho, and the mines in that area had a reputation for putting out high-grade silver ore.
