SANDPOINT – After snagging a win in Game 1, Sandpoint would rally late but fall short of the Vikings, 13-9, in Game 2 of Tuesday’s season-opening doubleheader at War Memorial Field.

The Bulldogs trailed 12-2 after the top of the fifth inning, getting their only true source of offense from Finn Mellander, who hit an RBI triple in the bottom of the third.

“We dug ourselves into a hole — a lot of walks and errors,” head coach Ricky Klontz said. “The conditions were rough, but they were rough for both teams.”

Down, but not out, Sandpoint rallied for four runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth. Leading the run was Drew Lehman, who hit a two-run triple in the fifth. Parker Reichart and Mellander also hit RBI singles during the rally.

“If we didn’t score there in the fifth, the game was over,” Klontz said. “From the perspective that we came all the way back and made it a game, I’m proud of the team, our chemistry, and our ability to battle and not give up. It was pretty awesome. We were out there for eight hours and it was 30 degrees and soaking wet from basically the start.”

On the mound, southpaw Brent Campbell pitched a solid last two innings to keep the Bulldogs close. The sophomore pitched two innings, giving up just one hit, one earned run, and one walk.

“Brent threw great and we are going to rely on him a lot this season,” Klontz said.

Sandpoint (1-1) will host Post Falls for a doubleheader Saturday.
