PREP TRACK AND FIELD: Sandpoint girls win team title, Smith sets new school record in shot put

BONNERS FERRY – Sandpoint’s Ivy Smith set a new school record in the shot put with a throw of 42 feet and one inch, leading the Bulldogs to a first place team finish at the Bonners Ferry Invitational on Saturday.

GIRLS

Noah Roark, Elizabeth Storms, and Devin McDaniel also won individual events for Sandpoint.

Roark started off the day with a new personal best in the 100 (13.61), good enough to win the event. The junior also placed second in the high jump (4-10). Storms, in her varsity debut, won the 800 in 2:37.28 and placed second in the 400 (1:05.74). Rounding out the girls’ top performers was Devin McDaniel, who won the pole vault with a mark of 11-0, three feet ahead of second place. Smith, whose shot put mark is currently first in the state across all divisions, also placed second in the discus with a throw of 115-0.

Sandpoint’s sprint medley relay consisting of Saige Smith, Madison Peck, Vivian Haag, and Ayla Hull also took home gold with a time of 2:04.08.

The Bulldogs finished first with 198 points, beating out Timberlake and Bonners Ferry, who finished second and third, respectively.

BOYS

Jett Longanecker, Nathan Roche, Paul Kent, and Klein Fragoso all took home first place finishes to lead the Bulldogs to a third place team finish on Saturday.

Longanecker ran a new personal best time of 51.93 in the 400 to take home gold. Across all divisions, Longanecker’s time ranks as second fastest in the state so far this year. In the 1600, Roche took home gold with a time of 4:43.11. Kent dropped 58 seconds off his 3200 time, winning the event in an impressive 9:58.15. Fragoso started where he left off last season, winning the pole vault with a mark of 13-0, two-and-half feet ahead of second place.

The Bulldogs also picked up three relay wins. In the 4x100 relay, Kamren Ziarnick, Will Mooney, Jess Herman, and Ryder Haynes finished first with a time of 46.38. In the 4x400 relay, Haynes, Longanecker, Daniel Ricks, and Van Lee edged out Timberlake, winning in 3:41.95. Sandpoint’s Julian Knight, Shooter Jones, Ziarnick and Kasten Grimm took home gold in the sprint medley relay with a time of 4:04.17.

Sandpoint finished third with 136 points. Timberlake won the team title with 160; Bonners Ferry was second with 139.

“It was a really good first meet for both the boys and girls,” head coach Doug Fry said. “There were lots of smiles and the weather was incredible.

Sandpoint will be back in action on Friday at the Sweeney Invitational hosted by Lewiston High.
