Stephen Wesley Maurer, 59, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010, at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Wash., following a one-year battle with cancer.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Lakeview Funeral Home, and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church. Funeral services will be held at noon, Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, at the LDS Church, Sandpoint Stake Center, with Bishop Arnie Wolff conducting. Burial will follow at Pinecrest Cemetery.

Steve was born May 23, 1950, in Logan, Utah, to Fred and Auleene Maurer. When he was 2 years old, his family moved to the Sandpoint area where his parents owned a dairy farm.

As a child and an adult he loved sports. He loved basketball, football and especially baseball. He enjoyed riding horses and participated with 4-H for several years. He spent a lot of time swimming in Pack River. He graduated from Sand-point High School in 1968. After high school he attended Utah State University to study mechanics and agriculture.

Steve, a hard worker, returned to Idaho where he worked in the woods and on a farm.

He married Robin Williamson on Feb. 14, 1981. He began his career in law enforcement in 1980 working for the Sandpoint Police Department until 2006, retiring as captain. He started off as a patrolman and worked up through the ranks over the years. He went to work shortly after retirement at Rokstad for the summer, and worked in roofing later that year. He enjoyed working with his son and being outdoors. He returned to work in law enforcement in October 2008 working for the Ponderay Police Department as a patrolman.

He taught his children to have a strong work ethic and to attend the Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He coached sports and enjoyed watching his kids various sporting events. He loved being outdoors and shared his love for animals with his children.

During his illness, he spent a lot of time watching his big screen TV in his recliner surrounded by his dogs.

Steve will be best remembered for his sense of humor. His last year he spent more time with his family, he worked in his garden, went to a Mariners game, had a great Thanksgiving with his children and grandchildren, and had Robin at his side throughout this journey.

He is survived by his wife, Robin; his mother, Auleene; nine children, Cari, Christy, Stephanie, Jacqualine, John, Sarah, Jacob, Isaac and Bert; two brothers, Stan and Earl; two sisters, Marilyn Coon and Cindy Eggleston; and 29 grandchildren.

Steve was preceded in death by his father.
