Taxpayers must hold officials accountable

| September 16, 2010 7:00 AM

In response to Linn Aitken’s letter on the budget, it is rather amazing that the budget can keep going up so much in a down economy. Anyone knows if money is tight, you spend less.

Every taxpayer needs to hold government accountable. Our elected officials are to look out for us and uphold the Constitution  on a local, state and federal level. I see big holes in these ideas.

As the budget goes up in Bonner County, you know that the largest chunk of revenue is going to come from unfair jumps in property tax assessments. Why not? The property owners are a good hit and no one is objecting. In a down economy with lowering real estate prices, does this make sense?

Again I will say: everyone needs to hold their elected officials accountable along with the government that is supposed to be upholding are best interests.
