Rally for the Cure scores big

SANDPOINT — Pink was the color of the day at the Elks Golf Course on Wednesday, as 32 women golfers — many clad in pink — teed it up during the annual Rally for the Cure Golf Tournament, raising more than $700.

The Sandpoint Women’s Golf Association hosted the fundraising event for the fourth straight year. Rally for the Cure is a partnership with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, organized to spread the lifesaving message of early detection of breast cancer.

The winning team in the four-person scramble included Patti Martuis, a teaching pro at the Links Golf Course in Post Falls, and locals Alice Coldsnow, Julia Parnell and Sue Helander, who collectively carded a 37.

“Everybody just appreciated it so much and had a good time,” said Mary Stevens, the event organizer who also won the closest to the pin award and a shiny new Cleveland hybrid club. “It was so awesome. I said ‘I want this club.’”

Per tradition, the group honored late player from the past, this year paying homage to Naomi Hagadone, a longtime Elks member.

“We need to recognize some of the women who helped make the Elks Golf Course,” said Stevens.

The second-place team was Linda Derr, Patty McDonald, Francis Crandell and Stevens. Martuis was kind enough to offer free passes to the Links to all of the top three teams. Stevens is hoping all 12 women can go down at the same time and take a lesson from Martuis.

Rally for the Cure sent the prize for closest to the pin, as well as balls and a host of other golfing goods for the players.
