Runners, volunteers, community team up for successful Jacey's Race

| July 20, 2013 7:00 AM

SANDPOINT — Sandpoint runner Sam Levora beat 394 other runners to finish first at Jacey’s Race last Sunday at Sandpoint High School, but the real winners are the four children and their families that will benefit from the more than $20,000 raised during the annual event.

Under sunny skies, no wind and temperatures in the high 70s, 394 persons crossed the 5K finish line of the 500 registered, and more than 250 people participated in the 1K race, which raises money to help local families with children currently being treated for cancer or other life threatening illness.

The $20,000 goes primarily to the families of the children benefitting this year, with additional gifts to Bonner General Department of Pediatrics, Wishing Star Sandpoint, and Community Cancer Services — three organizations geared to help the children of our community.

Race organizer Nanci Jenkins wished to thank the following for their efforts: Chris Hughes for tirelessly contributing his talents and time; Derik Suppe of K-102 for returning as the quite dynamic and entertaining MC; Judy Colgrove of Tango Restaurant for providing lunch to all of the volunteers following the race; Angie and Matt Brass for their support and assistance as well as directing their cross country team members to efficiently break down the course; and Sandpoint Fire and Bonner County EMS for being on hand and providing a treat for our beneficiary children.

More than 100 volunteers provided invaluable assistance, seemingly most of the community businesses contributed in some fashion by donating prizes or participating in fundraising events, and the Jacey’s Race Board came through once again directing all of the functions and events amazingly well.

“Each year we learn and grow,” wrote Jenkins in an email. “Most importantly, all of (the participants) provided four children with joy, perhaps the most important part of the race. We have a very giving community and it gives us joy to play our part.”
