Vogel earns berth at state

WALLACE — Clark Fork senior Tessa Vogel shot a 123, tying for third overall and earning an automatic berth at state on Monday during the 1A Region 1 golf championships at Shoshone Golf Course.

Initially, there was a mathematical error, and Vogel had retreated to the bus thinking she had missed out on state. After a recalculation, Vogel’s teammates came over to the bus to deliver the good news, and at first she thought they were joking.

“She came running off the bus,” described Clark Fork head coach K.C. MacDonald of Vogel. “She thought they (teammates) were lying, and all of a sudden it was bam, I’m in.”

Vogel will be the lone Wampus Cat competing at state next Monday and Tuesday at Circling Raven Golf Course, which the Wampus Cats have already played this season.

“I’d like her to get as close to 100 as she can,” said MacDonald of the state meet.

Mary Dick shaved more than 50 strokes off her score from districts last season, but was still a ways off from qualifying for state.

Wyatt Stevens led the Wampus Cat boys with a 116, good enough for a middle of the pack finish, while Keanu Dooley, Wyatt Debenderfer and Marcus Franck finished well back.
