What's up with the word count?

| September 30, 2014 7:00 AM

Every week the Daily Bee runs a “friendly reminder” column on the Opinion page telling us that “all endorsement letters for any candidate or issue are limited to 125 words.”

Somehow, since Aug. 12, two letters violating that policy seem to have escaped the editor’s notice. Both ran at least 250 words, and both explicitly endorsed Democratic candidates by name for state office while denouncing, by name, the Republican candidates for those same offices. Ironically, both also were positioned next to the above mentioned “friendly reminder” column.

So what’s the policy here? Endorsing a Democrat guarantees me a 250-word letter and a Republican 125 words? An explanation would be welcome.

Editor’s note: Every effort is made to ensure all letters comply with the letter policy. Unfortunately, sometimes a political letter with a higher word count — on all sides of the political spectrum — slips by us.

We will continue to do our best and remind letter writers to follow the policy.
