Dec. 20, 1966 — OWYHEE COUNTY OLDEST
Owyhee, the oldest county in Idaho, spreads its boundaries over 7,643 square miles and includes a population of slightly less than one person per square mile. Its name is a corruption of Hawaii, presumably used because of the presence of Hawaiians during the early spectacular gold and silver strikes at Silver city.

LAKE LEVEL TO BE LOWER
Unusually great power demand in the Pacific Northwest has resulted in a decision to draft water from Lake Pend Oreille to elevation 2051 feet, lowest since December 1957, according to the Army Corps of Engineers.
This greater-than-normal draft is to meet the need for additional power generation at Albeni Falls dam and other dams downstream on the Columbia.
Careful consideration has been given to the impact of reservoir regulation on the kokanee fishery of Lake Pend Oreille. Whenever possible, drafting of Lake Pend Oreille is suspended at the end of November to protect the incubating kokanee eggs.
It is anticipated the lake will reach 2051 feet on Dec.17 after which it will probably be held at that elevation until spring runoff. At that time the lake will be refilled to its normal full elevation of 2062.5 feet.

SKATING CLUB ORGANIZES
A skating club was formed this past week with a membership of about a hundred secured. Dues of 50 cents per month will be used to keep the ice clean on a certain area to be maintained as a rink for club members. The past few days men have been at work cleaning a large portion of the ice a short ways from shore alongside the long wagon bridge, a fact which promises increased interest and a larger membership.
