DAR announces essay, scholarship winners

| June 28, 2016 1:00 AM

The Wild Horse Trail Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, sponsors three essay contests each year to students in a public, private, or parochial school, or those who are home schooled — the American History Essay, Christopher Columbus Essay, and Good Citizens Essay and Scholarship Contest.

The purpose of the American History and Christopher Columbus essays are to promote American history throughout the year by honoring significant historical people, places, dates, and events. In many instances, the two essay contests provide an additional opportunity for teachers to reach out beyond the existing curriculum. The essay topics are always a surprise and students are not aware of the topic until it is time to write the essay.

Awards and certificates were awarded at an award ceremony on Saturday, April 9, 2016. The winner of the American History Essay was Elizabeth Neale, seventh-grade at House of the Lord Christian Academy; and the winner of the Christopher Columbus Essay winner was Kaleb Huseby, 10th grade, home schooled.

The purpose of the Good Citizens Essay and Scholarship Contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. The winner of the Good Citizens Essay and a $500 scholarship was Niko Icardo, a senior at Clark Fork Jr./Sr. High School.
