First Lutheran hosts video, Lenten observance

| February 24, 2017 12:00 AM

First Lutheran Church is inviting the community to continuing video presentation “What Would Luther Do?” on Sunday, Feb. 26, in the Fellowship Room at 9:05 a.m.

Five centuries ago, monk and academic Martin Luther stood up to say the church could do better. Today that’s still the case.

In this course, Elizabeth Eaton, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, applies Luther’s thoughts and writings to contemporary issues.

Her video presentations are entitled:

• Origins

• Poverty and Ecumenism

• Climate Change

• Legacy

This course is ideal for those seeking better understanding of how Lutheranism might address current affairs.

The congregation also invites invite community residents to join them as they begin their observation of Lent with prayer and the imposition of ashes on Wednesday, March 1, at either a 12:30 p.m. “service of the word” in the chapel or at the 7 p.m. evening worship in the sanctuary.

This spiritual practice of Lent reminds us of our mortality and need for God. March 1 begins the 40-day season which has been set aside for centuries as a means for Christians to turn toward God in prayer, fasting and giving in order to more deeply engage their relationship with God, a relationship most fully revealed through the cross and resurrection of Jesus the Christ.
