Cometto catch leads Legion team to sweep

| June 24, 2017 1:00 AM

SANDPOINT — Thanks to a highlight reel catch with two outs and the bases loaded in the 7th inning by outfielder Jacob Cometto, the North Idaho American Legion Post 15 U19 baseball team swept the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen 5-4, 10-6 recently in a doubleheader at War Memorial Field.

Cometto robbed what looked like an extra base hit into the gap with a diving catch, coming at the most opportune time.

“Man that kid can cover some ground when he needs to,” said head coach Ken Oler of what he called an ESPN worthy catch.

Another sweep, this time 2-1, 13-0 over the Moscow Blue Devils, ran the Post 15 team’s record on the year to 7-3.

“We had many great moments during that series but what I am most proud of is the focus and mental toughness the players demonstrated,” said coach Ken Oler. “Particularly in our games against Coeur d’Alene, where we were playing a really tough team, under intense pressure at times.”

The U19 team travels to Libby, Montana this weekend for the Big Bucks Tournament, followed by a series of road games. The team will be back at War Memorial Field on Thursday, July 6 when they take on Lakeland’s Northern Lakes Mountaineers. First pitch is at 5 p.m.
