Bullpup girls win first track meet of season

SANDPOINT — Led by a host of first place finishes, the Sandpoint Middle School girls team beat Post Falls, River City and Lakeland in the first track meet of the season for the Bullpups. The team scored 75 points to dominate the meet.

Hattie Larson scored in all three of her events, winning the discus with a throw of 75’2”, winning the 800 with a time of 2:45, and finishing 5th in the 1,600M (6:12) despite falling down on the first lap. Larson’s fall opened the door for teammates Piper Frank and Kylie Burnett, both competing in their first mile, with Piper taking with a time of 6:01 followed by Burnett in 3rd at 6:04.

Katie Stewart followed Larson in the discus coming in 2nd at 71’16”, and she was 1st in the shot with a distance of 29’ 1”. The SMS lady throwers took 8 of the 10 scoring spots in the discus and shot. Faith Clark was 3rd in both shot and discus. Stephanie Bishop was 4th in shot. Bella Phillips and Annaka McLelland where 4th and 5th in the discus.

Gabby Hicks did her damage by the winning the high jump with a height of 4’4”, placing 1st with the 4x200 relay team and taking 2nd in the 200, one hundredth of second behind the 1st place girl. In the 200M, Hicks was followed by teammates Emma Theilbahr in 4th and Torri Pelkey in 5th. The 4x200 relay team made of Tori Pelkey, Deyvn Martin, Gabby Hicks and Emma Theilbahr came in first with a time of 2:02.

Olivia Lynch and Kylie Brunette both high jumped 4’2” to finish 3rd and 5th, respectively. Rounding out the field events was Devyn Martin, Autumn Morgan and Lauren Breuner placing 3rd, 4th and 5th in the long jump.

Serenity Landis was 1st in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16:52, and Camille Neuder also chipped in by placing 5th in the 800.

The boys team took 3rd with a score of 38. The boys relay teams were their strong suit, placing 1st in the 4x100 and 4x200. Braden Kappen lead the Bullpups by anchoring both relays and placing 3rd in the 200. The 4x100 team edged out Post Falls by one hundredth of a second for a photo finish. The relay team made up of Kappen, Hunter Jacobson, Gerritt Cox and Zander Moore had a blistering time of 48:89. The 4x200 time was 1:48:46.

Cox was also a big contributor placing 1st in the long jump with a distance of 17’1” and 4th in the 100 meters. Jayden Lewis had a fast day and was 5th in the 100 and 3rd in the 400. Chris Koch battled hard for first place finish in the high jump, clearing 5’5”, followed by teammate Trevor Brackett in 4th. Keith Jensen scored on both the shot and discus, coming in 2nd and 5th respectively.
