SANDPOINT – The Leadership Sandpoint class of 2017-2019 raised $10,732.65 for two local organizations with their Cinco de Mayo event at Trinity at City Beach.

The event was held on Saturday, May 5, on the lawn at Trinity with music, a silent auction, major raffle prizes, and a taco and margarita bar donated by Trinity.

Funds were collected via donations for the food and drinks, as well as the auction and raffle items.

Major donors included Trinity at City Beach, Litehouse Foods, Washington Trust Bank, and Bonner General Health, as well as donations from many local businesses for the silent auction.

Angels Over Sandpoint, a long-time local non-profit, was gifted $5,366.32 to fund the $3,000 balance for their 2018 Back-Pack Program, and the extra going to their general fund to help those in need.

The Angels provide a backpack of school supplies at the beginning of each school year to children in need in Bonner County. They dipped in to their endowment to expand the program to Clark Fork and Priest River schools last year.

Angels Over Sandpoint provided backpacks to almost 900 students in the 2017 school year.

The Kaniksu Land Trust’s Pine Street Woods project was the second recipient of funds from the event.

The Kaniksu Land Trust is a not-for-profit organization promoting healthy lands and healthy communities. Pine Street Woods community forest is 160 acres of woodlands and meadows just minutes from Sandpoint and will provide a place where everyone can freely and frequently enjoy quiet recreation and hands-on learning in nature.

An equal donation of $5,366.32 was gifted to the project and will be matched by The Equinox Foundation.

“It was important for this Leadership class to raise funds for non-profits that benefit the entire community. Anyone, despite their age, ability, or economic situation, can enjoy the Pine Street Woods and can benefit from the Angels’ generosity,” said Leadership class member Ricci Witte.

Leadership Sandpoint has been a program of the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce since 1993.

It is a nine-month program designed to facilitate the development and growth of the leaders of tomorrow and provides opportunity to interact with community members as the class explores community issues.

The program’s mission is to provide a behind-the-scenes and interactive experience with the greater Sandpoint community with the objective of developing an information base of community history, resources, and issues; enhance leadership skills; provide networking opportunities for class members; and assist in identifying and building relationships with leaders in various sectors of the community.
