June 22, 1971 – PROUDLY WE SALUTE…

Donald C. Hadley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph D. Hadley, 514 N. 6th, was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. He graduated from Officer Training School at Lackland AFB, Texas.

Jack Karst, serving on the USS Ticonderoga, was recently nominated to represent his department in the ship’s “Sailor of the Month” competition. Fireman Karst is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Karst of Dover, where his wife Mary also resides.

SHOW CROWD WAS LARGE SATURDAY

Just like the heyday of flickers, Sandpoint’s Panida Theatre was well packed Saturday night for the showing of the popular film “Airport.” As the crowd left the theater at 10:45 p.m. the services of a police officer to direct pedestrian traffic was required at the corner of Main and First.

SHERYL DEE MORTON ENGAGED

Dr. and Mrs. William H. Morton Jr. of Sandpoint announce the engagement of their daughter, Sheryl Dee, to Michael D. Boeck, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale R. Boeck, Route 1, Sandpoint. Miss Morton is a 1967 graduate of Sandpoint Senior High School and received her degree in education from the University of Idaho on May 30. Mr. Boeck is also a 1967 SHS graduate and will be doing advanced studies at the U of I this fall. A Sept. 4 wedding is planned at the Presbyterian Church in Sandpoint.

June 22, 1921 – SAMUELS TO CELEBRATE

H.F. Samuels was in Sandpoint today from Samuels, making arrangements for the Fourth of July celebration at Samuels grove, a mile from the town of Samuels. The celebration is in honor of the establishment of a rural route, the first trip over which will be made July 1. There will be free music, free dancing and good speaking, all in one of the beauty spots of the county.

COUNCIL HAS SHORT, SNAPPY SESSION

Monday’s city council matters were: The closing of the dumping grounds out by the cemetery put Sandpoint in search of new grounds which were secured on the Ridley farm just opposite the old grounds; The attention of the local N.P. men is being called to the thistles flourishing near their warehouse, suggesting they be cut down before they go to seed; The matter of connecting up all toilets with the city sewers was referred to the health and sanitation committee for action;

Arrangement was made for a couple days off each month for police and fire department men.

REMEDIES TO CONTROL GARDEN INSECTS

Garden pests are arriving. Here are some control measures. Potato Beetle: spray foliage with arsenate of lead or Paris green; Onion thrip and cabbage louse: use kerosene emulsion or black leaf 40; Tomato worm: pick off, spray with lead arsenate; Cut worm: use poison bran mash.
