Priest River loses six in a row to end season

Bonners Ferry and Priest Rivers’ boys basketball team’s faced off twice in the same week.

The Spartans came up a little short in its first meeting with the Badgers, losing 68-52 at home.

But when Priest River traveled to Bonners Ferry the Badgers were prepared and routed the Spartans 73-44.

The first quarter had signs of its first matchup; by the end of the first eight minutes Bonners Ferry had a 10-8 lead.

Once the second quarter got started however, the Badgers began to go on a run. They outscored the Spartans 26-8 in the second half.

Bonners Ferry continued to push its foot on the gas as it outscored Priest River 37-25 in the second half.

Despite the loss, the Spartans still had three scorers in double-figures.

Tyler Engelson and Jace Yount paced Priest River with 12 and Blake Bennett added 10.

Asher Williams paced the Badgers with 16 points and Riley Petesch added 10.

Priest River played Kellogg on Tuesday in 3A Intermountain League action.

Kellogg is ranked number one in the Intermountain League and the Spartans are in last place.

Priest River managed to keep things close with the Tigers but ultimately dropped the game 56-41.

Priest River, which had won three in a row from Jan. 4 until Jan. 15, went on a six-game skid to end its season.

The Spartans finished the regular season 8-11 overall and 1-5 in league play, with its only league victory coming against Timberlake on Jan. 15.

Next up for Priest River is the district tournament, which starts on Saturday, Feb. 19.
