LEWISTON - The Sandpoint golf team had an opportunity to see where it stood at the Lewiston Country Club on Monday.

The Bulldogs competed in a 2-some scramble at the Lewiston Country Club.

Both the boys and girls placed third in their respective divisions, which gave coach Michael Deprez confidence for the season ahead.

“I’ve got nothing but optimism going forward,” Deprez said. “This type of event allows the athletes to walk away with some sort of clarity.”

The boys’ team had solid performances from Jacob Gove and Merek Bauck.

Gove was paired up with Joey Axel; the duo shot a team-high 70.

Bauck was paired with Jake Samuels; they scored an 80.

Bauck, the lone senior on Sandpoint’s boys’ team, showed leadership qualities on the course.

“He’s a tone setter,” Deprez said. “He lives and breathes golf. When it's time to golf, he sets the tone.”

Gove, who has consistently been getting better as years go on, started to develop even more at the event.

“He played extremely well,” Deprez said. “When you’re the son of a PGA player there’s an extra layer of pressure. He’s shown a tremendous amount of commitment and he’s starting to see the rewards from his hard work.”

As for the girls, they were without its number one and three golfers, Audrey Scheffler and Alexa Tuinstra. This resulted in Taylor Mire and Haily Fischer receiving time on the varsity lineup.

The group of six still managed to place in the top three even with the absence of Scheffler and Tuinstra.

“Just like the boys, the girls walked away with clarity on where they’re at,” Deprez said. “This was a good practice opportunity for them.”

Demi Driggs and Claire Loutzenhizer shot a 91 to lead the team. Driggs was impressive throughout the scramble event.

“Demi’s swing is coming around nicely,” Deprez said. “She really made a statement out there.”

Taylor Mire and Reagan Samuels shot a 97, but their scores don’t reflect their effort, according to Deprez.

“They shook off a lot of rust,” Deprez said. “Their score doesn’t show how good their game really is. This is where it’s okay to make mistakes.”

The Bulldogs will head back to Lewiston on Monday, March 21 at the Bryden Golf Course for the Lewiston Invitational.
