Bulldogs run well at Post Falls Invitational

| September 3, 2022 1:00 AM

POST FALLS — It was a day of strong performances by Sandpoint High School's cross country team at the Post Falls Invitational on Thursday at Kiwanis Park.

The races, each 2 miles in length, were separated by grade for the season opening event.

On the girls side, the 9th/10th race saw SHS ninth-grader Izzy Davidson leading the way for the Bulldogs at 16th place with a 15:21.

This race also saw strong performances from ninth-grade duo Makiyah Hagstrom and Hazel Keating, coming in 25th and 26th at 16:06 and 16:07, boys cross country coach Matt Brass said.

The race of the day as far as team placement and top-to-bottom strong finishes and team running, was the Bulldog's junior/senior girls race — with Sandpoint winning the team title.

Senior Ara Clark led the way for Sandpoint, earning a medal at fifth place overall with a 13:21 and an outstanding performance with a smart start and tactical second half, Brass said.

Teammates Lily Richardson (13:42, seventh place) and Maren Davidson (13:48, ninth place) were close behind, making a solid top three. Next in for the Bulldog's top five was Payton Betz (13:59, 11th) and Grace Rookey (14:20, 13th). Terra Bode was Sandpoint's sixth runner with a 15:04 for 18th and the team's only displacer, as the Bulldogs did not have seven competitors in the race, he said.

"A great day of races for our crew, a challenging course with all the components for true cross country racing — hills, trails, turns, grass, single track and a warm September afternoon," Brass added.

On the boys race, SHS freshman Roman Coscarelli took fourth in the race and was a medalist. "He ran a smart, well-paced race to lead the freshman," he said.

For the sophomores, the Bulldogs had four boys run, led by Fletcher Barrett who "had an outstanding run after coming back from injury over the past five months to lead the way," Brass said.

The junior boys was the biggest group, winning their division and scoring three in the top 10. Daniel Ricks was the first SHS runner in, finishing in fifth place with a time of 11:28 over the 2.1-mile course, and he also had the fastest SHS time of the day. Nate Roche was next, placing sixth on his first day back from sickness, and finishing in 11:30. Michael Hall was eighth in 11:49 to round out the SHS top 10 finishers.

For the seniors, Slate Fragoso led from gun to wire, finishing in 11:32 for the win. Anders Eastley ran a "brilliant race" to finish in fourth, catching two runners in the last 1/4 mile, Brass said.
